A bit for those who like to be prepared
Start with yourself. Always a good place to start and in my personal opinion
the best place to start because it should never ever be a case of do as I or
this or that self proclaimed expert says more a case of do as I have shown I
can do.
For a chap lets start as he wakes up and goes to the bathroom - With a weekend
coming up how about washing and shaving in cold water. The same goes for a
woman instead of a nice wash in a warm shower or in warm water give cold water
a go. How about even cleaning your shoes and or boots with old fashioned
shoe and boot polish and brushes and a cloth, sure many of you do that anyway
but equally many others just use a one wipe and shine type of stick applicator.
In late Autumn, Winter or early Spring, turn the heating off in the
bedroom and the bathroom - It will bring a sudden hint of the pre 1970 days (
i.e. the 1960's, 1950's, 1940's and earlier). Not that many people had hot
water on tap and central heating prior to the 1970's, sure there were some
places and areas but it was not as widespread as one may first think or some
imply. Many rural areas did not even have running mains water until the 1960's
and prior to 1950 and even in the 1950's many did not have electricity in their
homes, while vast swathes only had outside toilets until the 1970’s.
Most of us now live in double glazed, centrally heated homes, so with the
heating turned off in your bedroom and bathroom lets take it a bit further and
have the windows slightly open.
Now I am not suggesting that you subject your unwilling partner to this so you
may even have to consider going off to a 'willing friends house to try it
out.' Even just for a weekend or perhaps you fancy a night in the shed?
Sorry but it will not carry the message across as clearly as when in your own
home. For the single or those who have a willing partner and no children
try doing without television for a few days or even a week.
Feeling really brave? Then look on-line to the average weekly food rations from
the second world war and the immediate years after. To make it more realistic
just buy indigenous / or local food and vegetables that are in likely to have
been available and actually in season.
Any and all of the above will be a real eye opener to many, though I doubt many
will try it as it will take courage. Not because its particularly hard but
because it requires one to move away from modernity and take a step into recent
history. Leaving ones regular doses of comfort behind while being aware that
one can end it any second one chooses takes some courage when there is no
forced need. One can liken it to a soldier in an airborne unit stepping out of
a perfectly fine and fully functioning plane into the great blue yonder with
just a bit of cloth to help him or her get to the ground safely.
Think of it as an experiment on how ones grandparents lives may have been, for
it is very educational and yes often water was heated but not always and for
the guys shaving in cold water or even dry shaving can be quite and experience
and no - forget the pre shave and the balm's and the moisturisers and the after
shave for the average person aftershave was a fairly rare thing even in the
early 1960's and lets be fair that was only 50 years ago. With so many preppers
talking about being thrown back a 100 or more years you will find it
interesting.
The first splash or cold water in the morning will certainly wake one up quite
quickly. Plus it has with it the bonus it will not cost a fortune to give it a
try, at the most you only have to buy a razor that can be used without the need
of charging or electricity. For the foodstuffs only buy what would be in season
in your wartime rations and for that short period you will save money. As for
the television well what is really on it that so demands you sit like a puppy
dog paying attention to every flicker of the screen, lack of central heating
even in the two rooms I have suggested will minutely reduce your heating costs.
You can read a 101 website threads and posts, download countless
gigabytes of information buy dozens of books and read them all and know all
about just about every area of prepping and self reliance but until you
experience what I have suggested which is the very basics you have no idea of
what it will feel like and no. Going out on a short term survival course or for
a couple of days in a bivy or under a tarpaulin or canvas is in reality very
different to experiencing a few minor hardships and discomforts in your own
home.
Why do I imply it will be a shock? Because it will be happening in the sanctity and security of your own home. Yet is that not why you are prepping or learning about self reliance. 'Just in case' fine this is the barest minimum of what to expect if 'Just in case.' Arrives at your door and happens to you.
No my suggestions are not
about or from some older man tripping out on the past nor having a walk down
memory lane. Its simply about you experiencing a few small hardships, yet
nothing that perhaps your parents or more probably your grandparents
experienced, possibly on a daily or regular basis.
Plus experiencing a cold wake up call and wash in a safe and secure house will
set a few currently relaxing senses waking up.
Let us now consider the
partner who is I think a lot less than committed to prepping,
self-sufficiency and self-reliance let alone survivalism. Certainly a lot
depends not on just the relationship you are in but also the age of your
partner and his or her friends then some consideration comes into being when
one considers children and their ages too require some thought.
Outdoors equipment can be easier explained with trips to the countryside and
coast and making a picnic type of kit to take with you this would probably work
easiest with either young children or for those who lead a fairly sedentary
life and feel a 'need' to see more of the country without spending a
fortune, this can naturally gradually be expanded on.
Many have already suggested the saving money economic areas that are full of
handy useful excuses. Recent food scares could also be put to use by
saying things like I want to be sure we have enough GOOD AND SAFE food
to eat just in case there are any more muck up and contamination of the food
chain and supplies. A desire for healthy organic food can also be a
reason. A gradual interest in cooking or Victorian and Edwardian
lifestyles and pantries are another area worth exploring.
The recent bad weather (yes I do realise its just a fairly normal winter
weather) yet as it is so glorified, hyped up and promoted in the media as
dramatic and unexpected is an area of possible assistance i.e. CAR KITS,
EMERGENCY HOME BACK UP i.e. alternative lighting, heating and cooking
sources as well as possible food shortages due to supplies not getting into the
retail shops, due to snowbound roads. Frozen pipes and you can soon find a few
media references as a reason for stockpiling water and purification kit.
Digging up part of the garden to grow food can be explained as feeling the need
for more fresh air, a healthy or improving ones health exercise and a fun money
saving experiment, perhaps to get the children interested as well. Even the
starting of an allotment can be explained away with this idea or perhaps the
distant childhood 'memory' of visiting some relation and picking apples
or other fruit in his or her garden as a child.
Going for walks in the countryside or the hills or even the coast in order to
keep or get fit is a reasonable excuse. Tall stories about some friend or
distant relation or article in the media can help so long as it appears to be a
concern and not some major worry. A chance purchase of a book in a second hand
shop or better a library book which you picked up when dodging a spot of bad
weather or was looking for something else are always possible gentle
introductions.
Insurance against job losses or food chain manufacturer closures can assist in
basic food / kitchen stock increases as can buy more to save going shopping so
often in winter just get the habit going and keep it going all year.
Anglers and walker or those assisting or helping out with Scouts, Girl Guides,
or whatever or a trip with some mates or a trip you always wanted to make in
your school days but never made it are possible excuses. To get the children
fitter or to get a bit more air in them or perhaps to blow away the winter
blues are all possible excuses.
However here in Britain we can call on both the National and local government for support, in the form of the 'National risk register' and Local Councils Emergency Planning Advice, with their on-line advice and recommendations as to how one should be prepared for relatively common natural disasters from flooding to extreme weather conditions, to man made or at least man related problems from chemical spills to factory fires. All the websites have good clear information on the items that the government consider it essential to have together and a whole list of kit to be carried in a vehicle especially in winter.
Alternatively just say LOOK DIMBO the economy is the the toilet, your
job/my job
is no longer guaranteed, the country has no money, most people will tell
you the politicians could not
organise a booze up in a brewery and they have no faith in them, the
country is
filling up with terrorists and crazies and criminals from all over the
world, any fool can see it is going to blow apart and there will be
rioting on the
streets or super bugs with laziness and excess and poor management
ruining the hospitals, every day could be bringing
us closer to some holidaymaker, tourist, visitor or migrant bringing in a pandemic. So I have decided to
guard/insure against it so get used to it, get off your rear and help.

Many ask where to start – stage one
You have had the introduction now let’s get down to the
reality. Following on my introductory ‘Many ask where to start’ thread, let us
now consider and perhaps explore together what I believe would be the next step
after experiencing a little discomfort in your own homes.
Hopefully my ‘Many ask where to start’ thread will have triggered a hint of
what life was like pre the 1970’s and an idea of what it feels like to do
without some comforts that most take for granted and as the standard way we
live and expect to live in a modern Westernised civilised society. People now
consider it their right to be warm and comfortable, to be entertained at the
touch of a button so they can live with little or no effort almost in an idealised
yet compartmentalised way, instant heat microwave food and or take-aways.
The first step is to consider the hopefully short term inconvenience that any
of us might have to experience without any warning such as loss of electrical
power or loss of gas followed by perhaps the loss of water supply. For some
their first likely consideration may be about being cut off perhaps by snow or
flooding from obtaining goods and supplies.
The most obvious would be to purchase at least two torches one in your bedroom
and the other in the kitchen, if and when finances allow get a couple more
especially so if you have a two storey home we keep one at the top of our
stairs and another in our living room. In our case we have invested in a
rechargeable torch/lantern in our kitchen which switches itself on
automatically in the event of a power failure, I think they are great and worth
every penny that they cost. For a lantern in the home I recommend a no nonsense
plain Camping Gaz gas lantern as these last longer than a battery powered one
and I have found them to be pretty safe, convenient and just about idiot proof,
I have used Camping Gaz lanterns in our home as a back up for longer power cuts
for anout forty years. Yes, you can get a Tilley lamp or a paraffin fuelled hurricane
lantern but then you have to consider storage of the fuel and safety and some
insurance policy limitations plus they are smelly. Candles and night light to
me a night or tea light is just a waste of money so a candle, used then all my
life for the average home these day’s I would say only use candles in a proper
candle lantern, heating the bottom and standing them in an ashtray or a saucer
is asking for problems. When there are pets or children in the house the
potential danger will magnify dramatically. Wind up lanterns some are good and
quite useful but standing in a no power darkened house having to crank one up
before one can use it for a pretty limited period is not my idea of the way
forward. Light-stick’s great in the field but in a home your best bet with a
light-stick is to place one in an empty two pint milk container and use it as a
mobile lantern.
Next on my list of home backups is something to cook with and on. Here I have
purchased a twin burner gas powered camp kitchen stove, mainly because it is so
convenient to pull out of the cupboard set it up on a worktop and use it, our
one runs off a larger sized gas cylinder. I don’t have to elaborate on the
point that obviously we are quite used to frequent power cuts in the village we
live in. This is also backed up with a lightweight gas stove and a Triangia
alcohol / Methylated spirit stove, although I would have to raid my camping kit
for them. Some modern saucepans and frying pans are not really suited to using
on a camp kitchen type of gas stove so in the same cupboard in the kitchen is a
camping set of pots and pans along with a kettle also designed for use on a
camp stove. For if you as most have an electric kettle its just not going to
work on a camping stove and boiling water in a saucepan is not as convenient to
make a hot drink from as a kettle is.
Some may want to consider a wind-up or crank radio for important news
bulletins, while for others a comprehensive first aid kit and a couple of handy
fire extinguishers may be of more importance. So much will depend on the
individual, their family members, the situation and possibly the location they
are in. In a hard winter or extreme cold weather sleeping bags used inside a
bed can be a real bonus when it comes to keeping warm without any form of
heating in your home and don’t forget you can get sleeping bags that zip
together to make a double. Some will consider water purification, filtration
and or storage of spare water far more important, while for some having a few
weeks extra food stored will rank higher. Certainly keeping your body hydrated
and stoked up with good food will help you keep warm as can moderate activity
providing you have the calories spare to burn. In high flood areas some might
even want to consider some form of inflatable raft or dinghy, however there are
obvious danger for the inexperienced to consider before attempting to use such
in flood conditions although chest high waders may have a place here.
Hard copies of important personal information and or family information you may
wish to consider also having copies on a spare flash drive. Perhaps you could
even store a set well away from your home with a friend or relative in a
different area. Some people may even want to consider alternative activities or
alternative leisure pursuits with which to occupy oneself and ones family due
to lack of television and or the inability to get out and about easily.

At the end of the day so much will depend on you and your decisions based upon
your personal circumstances and the area you live in, coupled with the most
likely problems you could or might assume to be the likely immediate danger
bringing difficulties that you and or your family might face, in the normal
course of a winter although summer too is not without its potential problems.
This is where a little self inflicted and taught experience of doing without
and a little difficulty in ones standard of lifestyle in ones own home can and
will help you to envisage and understand. How you and or your family cope and
prepare for possible problems and difficulties is your responsibility and some
would say your duty.
