FOOD FOR FREE by Richard Mabey published by Collins Gem
ISBN:  978-0-00-718303-6

Food for free I have several copies of this from the very first edition back in 1972 to the very popular with me at least COLLINS GEM edition. The earlier books both paperback and hardback lacked much in the way of good pictures and photographs whereas the COLLINS GEM version is full of good colour photographs and for any would be forager it is the COLLINS GEM version which I personally recommend to everyone. Comfortably fitting in ones pocket it is ideal to have with you on your forages. A book very worthy of its place both in the pocket and on the bookshelf.

2:

WILD FOOD by Roger Phillips published by Pan Books.

ISBN 0 330 28069 4

Another very well photographed book by Roger Phillips with so much in it from collecting Birch sap to seaweeds to mushrooms to drying to wine making. It even has some great recipes for all to try.

Certainly on my list of must have books.

3:

WILD FOOD FOR FREE by Johnathan Hilton published by Gaia.

ISBN: 978-1-85675-285-5

This is what I would call a pretty book that if it did not have fungi, Cow Parsley, Fennel, Bitter Vetch, Watercress and plants that should have a more serious cautionary warning on them than they have, I might have considered giving it to a novice. However the photographs are in my opinion nothing like clear enough for easy 100% certain identification. Most of the wild foods in the book are so common I am therefore unable to recommend this book to novices as includes things which I would want to keep novices away from. Although perhaps a book for the much more experienced wild food forager.

4:

WILD FOOD a guide to gathering food in the wild by Jane Eastoe published by National Trust Books.

ISBN: 9781905400591

This book has a few colour drawings and minimal information. So sadly I must say that. In my personal opinion it is a total waste of money to buy this book.

5:

WILD FOOD by Ray Mears published by Hodder and Stoughton.

ISBN: 978-0-340-82790-1

A book certainly for those who love or follow Ray Mears. More what I would call a coffee table book than anything else, although it certainly does have some useful and interesting information in it. My personal opinion is someone has done some research into quite a few other works a very prettily laid out book with some excellent photographs. However for me it was a very disappointing book as the actual contents are very limited and far less than I would have expected from such a self proclaimed expert outdoor celebrity personage.

6:

WILD EDIBLES a practical guide to foraging, with easy identification of 60 edible wild plants and 67 recipes by Sergei Boutenko published by North Atlantic Books.

ISBN: 978-1-58394-602-2

Another nice American book for the United States and again a limited one but the information is pretty good and the recipes are well worth a try.

7:

THE JOY OF FORAGING by Gary Lincoff published by Quarry Books

ISBN 978-1-59253-775-4

An American author and a book that tends to look somewhat further than our shores and coastline. Still a good book and many will consider it worth having a copy. Good pictures some interesting recipes, but a difficult decision as to whether it is worth having in the United Kingdom.

8:

THE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO EDIBLE WILD PLANTS by the Department of the Army published by The Lyodn Press.

ISBN: 978-1-58574-661-3

Probably originally designed as an aid and addition to the US Army Survival courses and manuals this is a book with a indication of potential problems for service personnel in survival situations. A handy book for those who travel in the wilds of America.

9:

THE HEDGEROW HARVEST by Jan Orchard published by The Crowwood Press.

ISBN: 978 1 84797 040 4

A few pretty line drawings just added to make a sense of wild foods rather than anything else. This is not a book for a person out foraging but a good book for any forager in their kitchen with some most enjoyable recipes for all to try.

10:

THE FORAGER'S HARVEST a guide to identifying, harvesting and preparing edible wild plants by Samuel Thayer published by Foragers Harvest Press

ISBN: 978-0-9766266-0-2

I like this book for the information as much as for the clear photographs, certainly one of the better books for any would be forager. with over 200 good photographs but lots of really great information. Certainly well deserving its place on my bookshelf. Although sadly yet another book which has relied more on the information researched rather than more purely on personal experience and personally tried and tested knowledge although this does not diminish the quality nor its worthiness on any foragers bookshelf.

11:

THE FORAGER HANDBOOK a guide to the edible plants of Britain by Miles Irving published by Ebury Press.

ISBN: 978-0-09-191363-2

A reasonable book which could have been a very good book but sadly and badly let down by poor quality grey scale photographs and again we have another book where most of the information seems more book learned and book and internet researched than learned by actual first hand knowledge and personal experience.

12:

THE EVERYTHING GUIDE TO FORAGING by Vickie Shufer published by Adams Media

ISBN: 978-1-4405-1276-6

Primarily an American book almost purely designed for the United States land mass. Lacking severely in Photographs although it has a few in the back of the book. However it does have some most excellent advice on dehydration, root storage, freezing, canning, preserves, fermentation along with beverages and some really interesting recipes. Not a book to take foraging but a good book for the home and kitchen.

13:

THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO EDIBLE WILD PLANTS, MUSHROOMS, FRUITS AND NUTS how to find identify and cook them by Katie Letcher Lyle published by FalconGuides.

ISBN: 978-1-59921-887-8

Written for the United States Area with some very good recipes in it for me it was somewhat lacking in number of photographs, however the photographs that it does have are most excellent and very clear. Certainly one for the book shelf of people living in America even if just for the recipes alone, which is why it has a place on my book shelf.

14:

SEA FISHING river cottage handbook No6 by Nick Fisher published by Bloomsbury.

ISBN: 978 1 4088 0183 3

Not really a book on foraging but if one has a go at sea fishing then this book could prove quite handy, a pretty basic book on sea fishing but a fairly easy to follow one. With some very good instructions and photographs on basic fishing tackle and techniques with very clear directions with photographs on preparing fish. One of the few books available that covers so many basics in a manner that a total novice could follow and understand, along with a few recipes. A book that certainly deserves a place on any wild food harvester/foragers book shelf.

15:

NATURES GARDEN a guide to identifying, harvesting and preparing edible wild plants by Samuel Thayer published by Foragers Harvest.

ISBN: 978-0-9766266-1-9

A really great book for those living in the United States of America. Yet also a very good book for those living in the United Kingdom with lots of really good information and clear colour photographs. I can heartily recommend this book to any interested in wild foods and foraging. With even a few poisonous plants given a place.

LETTING IN THE WILD EDGES by Glennie Kindred published by Permanent Publications.

ISBN: 978 1 85623 117 6

This book almost totally lacks any illustrations and is of little or no use to the average forager. Perhaps is a good book for those who need to reestablish contact with Mother Earth and nature. It does have some nice recipes and good hints on making oils and using herbs a bit of stuff about wild gardening. Can I recommend it no in honesty I cannot, although I have it on my bookshelf if I had known more about it I would never have bought it as there are much better books covering the areas that this book does cover.

17:

Identifying and harvesting EDIBLE AND MEDICINAL PLANTS in wild and not so wild places by "WILDMAN" Steve Brill with Evelyn Dean Published by Harper

ISBN: 0-688-11425-3

Primarily an American publication but with nice clear line drawings and very good text including information on nutritional qualities, I have a 1994 edition and have often referred to it, finding it has a very important position on my bookshelves and not a book I would want my offspring to have to do without. Covering both natural habitats and the seasons.

18:

HEDGEROW river cottage handbook No7 by John Wright published by Bloomsbury.

ISBN: 978 1 4088 0185 7

Another in the River Cottage Handbook Series but not one that I can really recommend very strongly. This is a good book but so very limited in its contents especially when one considers the price. The recipes too are not the best I personally feel this book is not really worth buying unless one is really making a very serious study of what is available in the wilds and has reached the point where one needs to start comparing information from every source available. So although I enjoyed the book if funds are limited look to the more comprehensive options that are currently easily available.

19:

FORAGING discover free food from fields, streets, gardens and the coast by Paul Chambers published by Pen and Sword Books.

ISBN: 978 1 84468 084 9

Where do I start with this book, I like it lots, of good colour photographs, very good information, well set out in nice sections. I do however have one gripe and that is the photographs are not always with the information and I feel this could be a potential flaw. However I am very fond of this book which has a well deserved place in both the pocket and the bookshelf so Although I have a little concern I have no hesitation to recommend this book to everyone. Many will find it even handier than Food For Free.

20:

FORAGING the essential guide to free wild food by John Lewis-Stempel published by Right Way.

ISBN: 978-0-7160-2310-4

Completely without any illustrations, the recipes are alright but you need to be able to recognise your wild foods before you can use them. I am unable to recommend this book to anyone except a very experienced wild food forager who might hope to find some recipes he or she has not found elsewhere.

21:

FORAGING self sufficiency by David Squire published by New Holland.

ISBN: 978 1 84773 772 4

A book designed to appeal more to a particular portion of those interested in the outdoors with its very pretty coloured drawings. Sadly lacking in serious wold food and foraging content and therefore not a book I can recommend to anyone.

22:

FOOD FROM THE WILD by Ian Burrows published by New Holland Publishers.

ISBN: 978 1 78009 067 2

A great book for the forager sadly no photographs instead most excellent coloured drawings, although lacking in recipes and medicinal treatment creation and even oil creation. The basic Fruit, Nut, Seed, Flower, Leaf, Herb, Root, Seaweed and Fungi information found in this book make this book well worth its place on my bookshelf and I recommend it to anyone who wants to go foraging or is interested in gathering their own wild foods.

23:

EDIBLE WILD PLANTS wild foods from dirt to plate by John Kallas published by Gibbs Smith.

ISBN: 978-1-4236-0150-0

An excellent although limited book for the United States of America. The limits are on the number of species included in this very good book.

24:

EDIBLE WILD PLANTS AND HERBS a compendium of recipes and remedies by Pamela Michael published by Grub Street.

ISBN: 978-1-904943-73-0

A nice book essentially intended for the United Kingdom. Lots of handy and most interesting information. Although with some really nice paintings of the various plants I cannot help but feel that this book may be a let down to some who do not know the plants concerned well enough to easily recognise them. However the recipes are very good although I personally am left with the feeling that someone has sat at home and researched the contents rather than actually been outside and experienced the information personally, nor do I feel the author writes from personal knowledge.

25:

EDIBLE SEASHORE river cottage handbook No5 by John Wright published by Bloomsbury.

ISBN: 978 0 7475 9531 1

One of the few books available on seashore wild foods and sadly let down in many areas except possibly the recipes, the photographs although clear are let down by the quality of paper used although the information is pretty good provided on the wild foods covered is pretty good and there is in my opinion the book is unbalanced by too large a section of recipes. Yet it still deserves a place on any foragers book shelf.

26:

EDIBLE AND MEDICINAL PLANTS of Britain and Northern Europe by Edmund Launert published by Hamlyn.

ISBN: 0 600 56395 2

With clear coloured drawings and very reasonable information I think this is a very good book and well worthy of a place on any forager or self sufficiency enthusiast or off grid person. I think this is a most excellent book and well deserving a place on my book shelf.

27:

EDIBLE AND MEDICINAL PLANT HANDBOOKS two books in one by Robert Pelton published by Freedom and Liberty Foundation Press

No ISBN

This is a very large print book primarily for the American market. The illustrations are a poor quality line drawing type and not really any good for identification purposes. Although I have found some of Robert Pelton's work interesting I cannot recommend this book to those whose primary location in the United Kingdom nor to those in America seeking to use it for identification purposes. However the information on preparation and use of the plants is pretty good but there are better books out there.

28:

EASY WILD FOOD GUIDE by Neil Fletcher published by Aurum Press.

ISBN: 978 1 84513 254 5

A nice book good clear drawings and photographs with reasonable information on each, this book even has miniature drawings of the Winter Tree silhouettes of some deciduous trees which is very handy but far to much of the book is given over to fungi for my personal liking covering many of the more common wild foods this book is lacking in enough cautionary advice. However I would recommend this book to the more experienced forager as much for its pleasant reading as anything. Although I would caution anyone on taking a chance on some of the fungi.

29:

A HEDGEROW COOKBOOK by Glennie Kindred published by Wodden Books.

ISBN: 1 904263 03 8

For me a real disappointment the black and white drawings are there just to give a tone to the book and useless for any identification. The recipes are for cooks in the kitchen and not for the real outdoor forager. I cannot recommend this book.

30:

A COOK ON THE WILD SIDE by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall published by Boxtree.

ISBN: 0 7522 1115 3

Very much a cooks book but with some nice interest for foragers. This book even has alternative ingredients for the armchair foragers. With a few good clear pictures for foragers, this is certainly a book for the cook in the kitchen rather than the real outdoor forager.
